In January and February on a cold winters eve on Sunday or Monday, ring us to tell us you are coming because otherwise we may have an early night! Likewise in the more clement summer months our hours are more generous. No coaches or mini buses unless agreed upon. Children welcome lunchtime and early evening .

Email this pub The Highwayman Inn at Sourton, nestling in the magical and mythical north corner of Dartmoor National Park is considered England's most unusually inn: think a touch of Gaudi architecture and a sprinkle of Dali surrealism and you will have the essence of it. It was largely the creation of Buster Jones, an athletic entrepreneurial character who with his charismatic wife Rita, spent 40 years working on an already old inn (13th century) to create an amazing place to experience whilst having a drink and a bite to eat.. It is Gothic,, it is fairy-tale, it is quaint. The inn is now run by Buster and Rita's eccentric daughter Sally and her husband Bruce. The inn is filled with eclectic artifacts and curios, boasts an interesting and celebrated clientèle, provides romantic four poster bed accommodation, and even on occasion allegedly a resident ghost. There are great walking and cycle routes to hand. Poetry nights are every first Monday in the month and live music by arrangement or spontaneous. Open mic nights are every last Tuesday in the month, and aim to attract a wide range of styles and encourage all abilities. All artists are encouraged to develop their talents and to become part of the fabric of the establishment. Bruce loves music and is a great cook. The inn has excellent acoustics and proves surprisingly with all the nooks and crannies to be an ideal intimate musical environment. The Galleon bar provides an incredibly romantic setting for dining for those staying in one of our 'performance' four poster bedrooms.! It is like an old pirate ship. Bruce takes his cooking very seriously and all meals for residents are tailor-made to suit them and by prearrangement using locally sourced produce. Sally is a vegan so all unusual dietary requirements can be catered for without prejudice. Every third Thursday in the month the Dartmoor Pagans moot at the inn too as Bruce and Sally are Pagan sympathizers.

Our lunchtime menu is very traditional to the area, ie pasties, pies (some quite unusual), sandwiches, ploughman variations, soups etc.  They start at £5.00  In the galleon bar and for residents largely the menu is more sophisticalted ie lobster thermidore, seabass, scallops, all the steaks including T bone but there are also inventive veggie and vegan options.  Prices are not crazy.

Sandwiches: ham, beef, turkey, smoked salmon, cheddar cheese, prawn £.00  White or brown bread choice and all served with hand fried crisps and baby tomatoes.

Various Pasties: steak, traditional, pork and apple, cheese and onion and vegetable @£6.00, plus jumbo steak pasties, which are 50p more.

Various Pies: steak, steak and stilton, steak and ale, chicken and mushroom @£6.00 and homity pies, which are 50p more.

If you like something more unusual Tom’s pies are great.  There is the choice of:

ham, hock and pea,

lamb, chorizo and chickpea,

chicken, leak and lemon thyme,

potato, garlic and herbs,

steak and pot roasted carrot.

For £6.00 the pies and pasties are served with hand-fried crisps and baby tomatoes.

Our Highwayman Platters are rather like a Ploughman but you can have either ham, cheese, smoke salmon, turkey, prawn, beef or pork pie and are from £9.00.

Soup of the day served with a bread roll £5.00

Savouries:  pickled eggs, pickled onions, scotch eggs, olives and hand fried crisps etc are also available as nibbles at various prices.
