Landlords Simon Short Silver Street Chacombe Banbury OX17 2JR Oxfordshire Click to zoom Email this pub Located a mile or so north of Junction 11 of the M40, off the A316, The George & Dragon stands overlooking the small green of this picturesque village. The inn itself is one of the prettiest buildings in Chacombe with its mellow stone walls and latticed windows. When it was built in the 1600s a drover's road passed through the village and cattle and sheep would graze in the surrounding fields before being taken to Banbury Market the next day. Meanwhile, the drovers would repair to the inn for refreshment and lodging. At that time, the inn brewed its own beer. The inside is a picture with ancient beams, inglenook fireplaces with real fires and flagstone floors create a real old world effect. An interesting feature is an old well which plunges down beneath the bar. Its top has been glassed over and incorporated into the bar. Amongst the wide range of beverages on offer here are 3 real ales Everard's Beacon and Tiger, plus a rotating guest ale. Another point of interest is the collection of clocks displayed around the rooms clocks are a particular passion with mine hosts Jane and David Clarke. They took over here early in 2004, their first venture into the licensed trade although they have several years experience in the catering business. They have put their catering experience to good use in the excellent food served here every lunchtime (noon until 2pm) and evening (6pm to 9pm), except for Sunday evenings. There's a wide range of appetising dishes choose from the printed menu or the specials board.Such is the popularity of the restaurant that booking is advisable at Sunday lunchtime and on Wednesday evening. The non-smoking restaurant seats 26; children are very welcome. The Clarkes host occasional food-themed evenings and food quizzes just call for details. The inn also has 2 guest bedrooms, both upstairs and with en suite facilities. Each can sleep up to 4 guests; breakfast is included in the price. The inn has ample off-road parking; all major credit cards except American Express and Diners are accepted. |
